This meeting was for People Power volunteers who had hosted small meetings in their different localities to advance the Freedom Cities agenda with their local law enforcement. It was an opportunity for hosts from around Northern California to come together for the first time to discuss experiences and ideas with other hosts.

Much of the meeting was spent in small group discussion. We shared our experiences with holding local meetings, trying to form ongoing local groups, and creating ongoing strategy and actions with them. We also brainstormed and talked about what we would want People Power to do in the future.

And we spent time as a whole group, finding out what we were thinking collectively and prioritizing our ideas and needs. We used this meeting for hosts to meet other hosts, to develop a sense of the “we”, and to discover our collective vision for going forward.

AmericaSpeaks reconnect meeting

This meeting was for the core network of AmericaSpeaks. The participants were people spread all across the country who had worked together (sometimes for many years) on many of AmericaSpeaks’ marquee projects (see About page). The meeting was the result of a new groundswell of excitement within the network to bring the AmericaSpeaks (AS) model back into use for large, deliberative civic meetings.

We used small groups to get reacquainted and to talk about how our experiences with AmericaSpeaks have continued to play a key role in our present work and life. Then we discussed what issues we thought were important for Americans today, in our current political situation, to have an opportunity to have a large-scale deliberative discussion about. The topics most commonly sited in the small groups were shared with the whole group, and we spent time to set a group priority of the top three.

As part of our reconnecting, we became energized around the plan to come  together for a reunion, and use that to start to reimagine AmreicaSpeaks in a new form that we could bring back to life. Because the collective virtual format worked so well for reengaging with each other without having to travel to a central location, one of the prioritized goals that came out of the meeting was to make part of the reunion virtual – so that network members who couldn’t travel to the reunion location could still take part in it.
